Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: explain reasons for controlling invasive alien species
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the ecological, economic, health and social impacts of invasive alien species.
  • Explain the main reasons for controlling invasive alien species.
  • Compare the three major control approaches (prevention, early detection & rapid response, long‑term management).
  • Evaluate a case study (American mink) to illustrate how control measures are applied and assessed.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • PowerPoint slides summarising impacts and control methods
  • Handout with the American mink case study and a decision‑making flowchart
  • Whiteboard markers and chart paper
  • Short video clip on invasive species impacts (optional)
Introduction:
Begin with a striking image of a local invasive plant overtaking a native meadow to hook students. Ask learners to recall any invasive species they have seen locally and discuss why they might be problematic. Explain that today they will identify the reasons for controlling invasive alien species and how these reasons guide management decisions.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write quick notes on an invasive species they know and its perceived impacts; teacher collects responses.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Present slides on ecological, economic, health and social impacts using the source table.
  3. Guided discussion (8') – In pairs, match the six reasons for control with real‑world examples.
  4. Control strategies overview (10') – Explain prevention, early detection & rapid response, and long‑term management; display the decision‑making flowchart.
  5. Case study analysis (12') – Groups examine the American mink case, complete a worksheet evaluating control methods and outcomes, then share findings.
  6. Formative check (5') – Quick quiz (Kahoot or exit ticket) on key reasons and strategies.
  7. Summary & reflection (5') – Teacher recaps; students write one takeaway on a sticky note.
Conclusion:
Summarise that controlling invasive alien species protects biodiversity, ecosystem services and human wellbeing. Students complete an exit ticket stating the most compelling reason for control and why. For homework, each student researches a local invasive species and proposes an appropriate control approach.
