Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise
Learning Objective/s:
  • Define each of the four factors of production.
  • Explain how land, labour, capital and enterprise interact to create goods or services.
  • Distinguish between fixed and variable factors.
  • Analyse the coordinating role of enterprise in business.
  • Apply the concepts to a real‑world business example.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck on the four factors
  • Handout with comparison table and key points
  • Whiteboard markers and chart paper
  • Sticky notes for the opening activity
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll: “What resources does a local bakery need to operate?” Students share ideas, linking to prior knowledge of business inputs. Explain that today they will identify and classify the four factors of production and see how enterprise coordinates them. Success criteria: students will be able to define each factor, give examples and illustrate their interaction.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5 minutes): Students write resources needed for a chosen business on sticky notes and post them.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10 minutes): Teacher presents definitions, examples and the fixed vs variable distinction using slides.
  3. Guided analysis (10 minutes): Class works through the comparison table, completing missing examples on the handout.
  4. Group activity (15 minutes): Teams create a flowchart showing how the four factors combine to produce a product; each group presents in 1‑2 minutes.
  5. Check for understanding (5 minutes): Quick Kahoot quiz with four concept questions.
  6. Recap & exit ticket (5 minutes): Students write one example of each factor and one way enterprise adds value; tickets are collected.
Conclusion:

Review the key points, stressing the difference between fixed and variable factors and the essential coordinating role of enterprise. Use the exit tickets as a retrieval check. For homework, ask learners to select a company and write a short paragraph describing how it uses each factor of production.
