Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Global Perspectives & Research
Lesson Topic: communicate information visually in order to engage an audience (AS Level only)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key elements of effective visual communication.
  • Analyse how visual media can support arguments in Global Perspectives.
  • Apply a systematic design process to create accurate, accessible visual representations of data.
  • Evaluate visual designs for clarity, relevance, and ethical considerations.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Computers with spreadsheet/graphic software (Excel, Canva, GIS)
  • Sample data sets (e.g., climate statistics)
  • Printed handouts of the design checklist
  • Colour‑blind palette guide
  • Sticky notes and markers for sketching layouts
Introduction:

Begin with a striking infographic on climate change to capture interest. Review students’ prior experience creating charts and maps in earlier units. Explain that today they will learn a systematic design process to produce visuals that engage specific audiences and meet assessment criteria.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students examine a sample visual and note strengths/weaknesses. (Check understanding)
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Present key elements of effective visuals and the design checklist. (Direct instruction)
  3. Guided practice (15'): In pairs, define purpose and select data for a chosen issue, completing stages 1‑2 of the checklist. (Collaborative)
  4. Software demo (10'): Demonstrate creating a chart/map using Excel/Canva, highlighting accuracy and accessibility features. (Modeling)
  5. Independent creation (20'): Students draft a visual (chart, map, or infographic) applying all six design stages, with teacher circulating for feedback. (Application)
  6. Peer review (10'): Groups exchange visuals, use the checklist to give constructive feedback and revise. (Formative assessment)
Conclusion:

Summarise how the checklist ensured clear, accurate, and engaging visuals. Students complete an exit ticket describing one design improvement they made. Assign homework to refine their visual and write a brief caption linking it to their research question.
