Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: analyse simple market research data
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main primary and secondary market‑research methods.
  • Calculate totals, percentages and averages from simple survey data.
  • Identify patterns, trends or outliers in the analysed data.
  • Draw evidence‑based conclusions and formulate business recommendations.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed worksheets with the colour‑survey table
  • Calculators
  • Computer with spreadsheet software (Excel/Google Sheets)
  • Bar‑chart template handout
Introduction:

Begin with a quick question: “How does a retailer decide which colours to stock?” Students share ideas, linking to previous lessons on market research. Explain that today they will turn raw survey numbers into actionable business decisions. Success criteria are displayed: accurate calculations, clear pattern identification, and a justified recommendation.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Think‑pair‑share on reasons for collecting customer preferences.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Review primary vs. secondary research and the six‑step analysis process.
  3. Guided practice (15') – Using the colour‑survey worksheet, students enter data into a spreadsheet, calculate totals and percentages.
  4. Pattern discussion (10') – In groups, identify the most/least popular colours and any outliers; record observations.
  5. Recommendation activity (10') – Each group writes a brief recommendation for stock levels based on their analysis.
  6. Check for understanding (5') – Exit ticket: one sentence summarising the key insight from the data.
Conclusion:

Recap the analysis steps and how they led to a business recommendation. Collect exit tickets and highlight a strong example. For homework, students analyse the coffee‑shop visit data using the same steps and prepare a short report.
