Lesson Plan
Grade: Grade 10 Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: private and public sectors
Learning Objective/s:
  • Define the private and public sectors and outline their key characteristics.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of private‑ and public‑sector organisations.
  • Explain the role each sector plays within a mixed economy.
  • Analyse how public‑private partnerships operate and why they are used.
  • Apply basic profitability and efficiency ratios to assess sector performance.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts with the sector comparison table
  • Worksheet containing case‑study questions
  • Laptop for teacher demonstration
  • Sticky notes for the opening activity
Introduction:

Begin by asking students to name places where they shop or receive services and quickly sort them into “private” or “public”. This activates prior knowledge of everyday organisations. Explain that today they will explore how these sectors differ and why both are essential in a mixed economy. Success will be measured by their ability to define, compare and apply the concepts covered.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write examples of private and public organisations on sticky notes and place them on the board.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Teacher presents definitions, ownership, purpose and funding using slides.
  3. Guided analysis (12') – Whole‑class examination of the comparison table; key points highlighted and checked for understanding.
  4. Group activity (15') – Case study on a public‑private partnership; groups complete worksheet questions.
  5. Class discussion (8') – Groups share findings; teacher steers conversation on advantages/disadvantages.
  6. Quick quiz (5') – Exit ticket with three multiple‑choice questions on sector roles and characteristics.
Conclusion:

Recap the main differences between the private and public sectors and how they complement each other in a mixed economy. Collect the exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: students research a local public‑private partnership and write a brief paragraph evaluating its benefits.
