Lesson Topic: Know and understand hardware as the physical components of a computer system
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify the five functional hardware categories and name key components in each.
  • Explain the function of the CPU, RAM, and storage devices within a computer system.
  • Compare different types of computer systems (PC, server, mainframe, etc.) and their typical applications.
  • Describe how the motherboard connects components and the role of the power supply and cooling.
  • Demonstrate the data flow from an input device to output using a simple example.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Computer with internet access for teacher demonstration
  • Printed handouts of the hardware component table
  • Sample hardware images or physical components (CPU, RAM stick, motherboard cut‑out)
  • Worksheet with quick revision checklist
  • Markers and sticky notes for labeling activity
 Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip showing a computer being assembled, prompting students to notice the physical parts they see. Ask learners to recall any hardware they have used at home and list them on the board. Explain that today they will explore how these components work together and state the success criteria: identify categories, describe key functions, and illustrate data flow.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students complete a quick KWL chart on “What hardware do I know?”.
  2. Teacher mini‑lecture (10') – Define hardware and present the five functional categories using the slide table.
  3. Interactive demonstration (15') – Show a disassembled PC, point out CPU, RAM, motherboard, PSU, and discuss each component’s role.
  4. Guided activity (10') – In pairs, students label a blank block diagram of a computer system.
  5. Data‑flow simulation (10') – Walk through the keyboard‑to‑monitor sequence, asking students to map each step on the board.
  6. Check for understanding (5') – Quick quiz (exit ticket) with three questions covering categories and component functions.
Conclusion:
Summarise the five hardware categories and how they collaborate to process data. Have students write one thing they found surprising on an exit ticket. Assign homework to research a specific type of computer system and prepare a short description of its hardware configuration.
