Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Information Technology IT
Lesson Topic: Define the digital divide and its causes
Learning Objective/s:
  • Define the digital divide and its multiple dimensions.
  • Identify at least five major causes of the digital divide.
  • Analyse how economic, geographic and social factors interact to widen the gap.
  • Evaluate strategies that could reduce digital inequality.
  • Communicate the key points in a concise written summary.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck with definition, causes and diagram
  • Handout of the summary table of causes
  • Sticky notes or index cards for group activity
  • Markers and flip‑chart paper
  • Internet access for quick research (optional)
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: raise your hand if you own a personal laptop or tablet. Discuss how many students rely on school devices versus home access, linking to prior knowledge about ICT access. Explain that today’s lesson will define the digital divide and explore why it persists, with success measured by students being able to list its main causes.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students answer the poll and write one reason they think some people lack digital access.
  2. Teacher input (10’) – Present the definition and layered diagram via slides.
  3. Guided analysis (12’) – Examine the summary table; pairs match causes with real‑world examples.
  4. Group discussion (8’) – Pairs share findings; teacher highlights inter‑relationships.
  5. Case‑study activity (10’) – Small groups propose a policy or community initiative to address a chosen cause and record it on a poster.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Exit ticket: write a one‑sentence definition and list three causes.
Conclusion:

Summarise that the digital divide is multi‑dimensional and driven by economic, geographic, educational, infrastructural, policy, cultural and age factors. Collect exit tickets and ask students to reflect on one local action they could take. For homework, research a current initiative aimed at narrowing the divide and prepare a brief summary.
