Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: Environmental degradation: causes, impacts, management
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the major human and natural causes of environmental degradation.
  • Explain key environmental impacts such as soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and climate effects.
  • Evaluate a range of management strategies including policy, technology, and community approaches.
  • Apply the integrated river‑basin management framework to a real‑world case study.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop for presentation
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of cause‑impact‑management table
  • Worksheet with review questions
  • GIS map or diagram of a river basin (optional)
  • Sticky notes or coloured cards for group activity
Introduction:

Begin with a recent headline about severe flooding to hook interest, then ask students what they already know about how human activities affect the environment. Explain that today they will explore the chain from causes to impacts and how we can manage them. Success will be measured by their ability to link causes, impacts, and appropriate management actions.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Quick quiz on previous geography topic to activate prior knowledge.
  2. Teacher input (10') – Present the main causes of environmental degradation using slides and the summary table.
  3. Group mind‑map activity (15') – Students create a cause‑impact‑management diagram on poster paper, using sticky notes.
  4. Case study: Integrated River Basin Management (15') – Walk through the five IRBM steps, discussing each with the class.
  5. Guided discussion (10') – Evaluate the effectiveness of different management strategies; record key points on the board.
  6. Review questions & exit ticket (5') – Students answer one of the three provided questions and write one actionable management idea on a slip of paper.
Conclusion:

Summarise how specific causes lead to distinct environmental impacts and how targeted management can break that chain. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, then assign homework: research a local environmental degradation issue and propose a realistic mitigation or adaptation measure.
