Grade: Date: 01/12/2025
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to add alternative text/screentip to an object
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose of alternative text and ScreenTips for making presentations accessible.
  • Identify which objects need Alt Text and which can be left blank as decorative.
  • Apply the step‑by‑step procedure to add Alt Text and ScreenTips in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of added Alt Text/ScreenTips by testing them in Slide Show mode.
  • Use keyboard shortcuts to efficiently access the Alt Text pane.
Materials Needed:
  • Computer with Microsoft PowerPoint installed
  • Projector and screen
  • Sample slide containing a photograph, a chart, and a decorative shape
  • Handout with Alt Text checklist and keyboard shortcuts
  • Whiteboard or digital note‑taking tool
Introduction:

Begin with a quick discussion on why accessibility matters in digital media. Recall the previous lesson on creating effective presentations and link it to the need for descriptive text. Explain that today’s success criteria are to add correct Alt Text and a functional ScreenTip to selected objects.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students brainstorm examples of inaccessible slides and share ideas.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Teacher defines Alt Text, ScreenTip, and accessibility, showing a screenshot of the Format Shape pane.
  3. Demonstration (10'): Live step‑by‑step addition of Alt Text and a ScreenTip using both mouse and keyboard shortcuts.
  4. Guided practice (15'): Learners work on the sample slide, adding Alt Text to the photo and chart, leaving the decorative shape blank, and adding a ScreenTip to the chart. Teacher circulates to provide feedback.
  5. Check for understanding (5'): Students run Slide Show mode to test the ScreenTip and read back one of their Alt Text descriptions to a partner.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Write a concise Alt Text (≤125 characters) for a new object shown on the board.
Conclusion:

Summarise how Alt Text and ScreenTips improve accessibility and reinforce the checklist criteria. Collect exit tickets as a quick assessment. For homework, students must add Alt Text and a ScreenTip to a slide from a personal presentation and bring it for the next class.
