Lesson Plan
Grade: 12 Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: determinants of demand
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main determinants of demand and how each shifts the demand curve.
  • Explain the difference between a movement along the demand curve and a shift of the curve.
  • Apply knowledge of determinants to predict demand changes in real‑world scenarios.
  • Analyse exam‑style questions by identifying the relevant determinant and the direction of the shift.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for slides/diagrams
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout summarising determinants with examples
  • Graph paper or digital graphing tool
  • Sample price and income data sets for quick activity
  • Exit ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “If the price of coffee rises, what will you buy instead?” Connect this to prior learning of the law of demand and set the success criteria: students will identify determinants and illustrate demand shifts.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students answer the poll on sticky notes; teacher collects responses.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Review the demand function and introduce each determinant with real‑world examples; show a diagram of a demand shift.
  3. Guided practice (12'): Small groups analyse scenarios, decide which determinant is at play, and sketch the resulting demand shift.
  4. Whole‑class feedback (8'): Groups present; teacher confirms direction of shift and clarifies misconceptions.
  5. Quick check (5'): Individual short‑answer questions (the three provided) to assess understanding.
  6. Summary & exit ticket (5'): Students write one determinant and its effect on demand as an exit ticket.
Conclusion:

Recap the key determinants and how they move the demand curve. Use an exit ticket to retrieve one example of a right‑shift and one of a left‑shift. Assign homework: complete a worksheet that asks students to predict demand shifts for five different market situations.
