Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Mandarin Chinese
Lesson Topic: Colours
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and pronounce ten common colour words in Mandarin with correct tones.
  • Write the Chinese characters for each colour accurately.
  • Construct simple sentences using colour vocabulary with the patterns “是…的”, “有…”, and “喜欢…”.
  • Demonstrate listening comprehension by extracting colour information from spoken descriptions.
  • Use colour vocabulary in speaking activities to describe personal items and others’ clothing.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Colour flashcards (Chinese characters + pinyin)
  • Audio recording of outfit descriptions
  • Picture cards of people for pair work
  • Worksheet “My Favourite Colours”
  • Colour‑Bingo cards (5×5 grid)
  • Coloured markers and whiteboard
Introduction:

Begin with a quick “show‑and‑tell” where students point to objects that match a colour flashcard, activating prior knowledge of everyday colour words. Explain that today they will master pronunciation, writing, and sentence patterns for colours. Success will be measured by accurate speaking, correct character writing, and the ability to describe at least three items using the new structures.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Warm‑up flashcards (5') – Display each colour card, have the class repeat the word, and ask volunteers to point to a matching classroom object.
  2. Listening practice (7') – Play the audio describing a person’s outfit; students write down every colour they hear.
  3. Pair work – Describe your friend (10') – Using picture cards, pairs create sentences with “是…的”, “有…”, and “喜欢…” patterns, then swap pictures.
  4. Writing mini‑paragraph (8') – Students write 5‑6 sentences describing the colours of items they use daily.
  5. Colour Bingo speaking game (10') – Teacher calls colour descriptions; students mark the bingo grid and orally confirm the sentence (“我穿的衣服是黄色的”).
  6. Consolidation & feedback (5') – Quick oral check: students pronounce each colour and share one sentence; teacher notes common errors.
Conclusion:

Recap the eight colour words and the three sentence patterns by having a few volunteers demonstrate a sentence on the board. For the exit ticket, students write one new sentence describing an object in the classroom. Remind them to complete the “My Favourite Colours” worksheet and record a short video naming three favourite colours for homework.
