Lesson Topic: how businesses can be more sustainable: using renewable energy, using fewer resources /less waste, reusing, recycling, developing environmentally friendly products, using environmentally friendly packaging
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how renewable energy can be integrated into business operations.
  • Explain the benefits of resource efficiency and waste reduction for profitability and the environment.
  • Evaluate strategies for re‑using and recycling materials within a production process.
  • Design a brief plan for an eco‑friendly product or packaging development.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed handouts of the summary table
  • Case‑study worksheets on sustainable practices
  • Short video clip on renewable energy in industry
  • Markers and flip chart for group brainstorming
 Introduction:
Start with a quick poll: How many of you have noticed companies advertising “green” initiatives? Recall previous lessons on cost reduction and competitive advantage – sustainability builds on those ideas. By the end of the lesson you will be able to identify and evaluate at least three methods businesses use to become more sustainable.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list examples of sustainable practices they have seen in everyday products.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Overview of the six methods with slide deck and a short video excerpt.
  3. Guided analysis (15’) – In pairs, examine the summary table, discuss benefits and challenges of each method, and complete a worksheet.
  4. Case‑study activity (15’) – Groups design a sustainability improvement plan for a fictitious manufacturing company, focusing on two chosen methods.
  5. Gallery walk & feedback (10’) – Groups display posters; peers give one constructive comment per poster.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Quick Kahoot quiz covering key concepts.
Conclusion:
Summarise the key ways businesses can reduce environmental impact and how these actions also support profitability. For the exit ticket, write one actionable idea you could suggest to a local business to improve its sustainability. Homework: research a real company’s sustainability report and prepare a brief summary of the methods they employ.
