Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: English as a Second Language
Lesson Topic: engage in different types of interaction (e.g., conversation, short talk, interview)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Initiate, sustain, and appropriately close a conversation using turn‑taking strategies.
  • Deliver a short talk with a clear structure, linking language, and appropriate vocabulary.
  • Conduct an interview by formulating relevant questions and providing concise, elaborated answers.
  • Demonstrate fluency, grammatical accuracy, and correct pronunciation across all interaction types.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for sample videos.
  • Printed handouts with useful phrases and task prompts.
  • Picture cards for picture‑talk activity.
  • Audio recorder or smartphone for self‑assessment.
  • Whiteboard and markers.
  • Timer/stopwatch.
Introduction:

Begin with a quick video clip of students engaging in a lively conversation, then ask learners to share any recent experiences of speaking English in real life. Review the three interaction types they have practiced before: conversation, short talk, and interview. Explain that today they will refine their ability to initiate, organise, and conclude each interaction, which will be assessed using the IGCSE criteria.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Warm‑up (5'): Speed‑conversation activity – pairs rotate with prompts while the teacher monitors turn‑taking.
  2. Language Bank (10'): Groups create a phrase bank for each interaction type and present their useful expressions.
  3. Short Talk Modelling (10'): Teacher demonstrates a short talk using the flowchart; students note the structure.
  4. Picture Talk Practice (12'): Students choose a photo, give a 1‑minute talk, and peers ask follow‑up questions; timer used.
  5. Mock Interview (12'): Pairs role‑play interviewer/candidate on a given topic, then switch roles after feedback.
  6. Error Correction & Feedback (6'): Whole‑class discussion of common errors with corrective practice.
  7. Consolidation (5'): Quick exit‑ticket – each student writes one tip for each interaction type.
Conclusion:

Summarise how the activities helped students practice initiating, organising, and concluding interactions with appropriate language. Collect exit tickets where each learner records one personal goal for the next speaking task. Assign homework to record a 2‑minute short talk on a chosen topic and upload it for teacher feedback.
