  • Network diagram handouts

  • Physical router, switch, and hub (or demo models)

  • Markers and sticky notes for group activity
 Introduction:
Begin with a quick video showing data flowing through a network, then ask students what devices might control that flow. Review the OSI model layers briefly and state that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify and justify the use of routers, switches, and hubs.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students list any network devices they have seen at home or school.
  2. Direct Instruction (10'): Teacher explains routers, switches, and hubs with the OSI layer reference, using the projector.
  3. Guided Practice (12'): Small groups analyse the provided comparison table and fill in missing characteristics on their worksheets.
  4. Demonstration (8'): Show a live simulation of traffic moving through a hub, switch, and router, highlighting collision domains and routing decisions.
  5. Application Activity (10'): Groups design a simple office network diagram, selecting appropriate devices and justifying their choices.
  6. Check for Understanding (5'): Quick quiz (Kahoot or exit ticket) with three scenario‑based questions.
Conclusion:
Summarise the key differences between routers, switches, and hubs and how each impacts network performance and security. Collect the exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign a short homework task: students must research one modern networking device (e.g., a managed switch) and write two sentences on how it improves on the basic devices covered today.
