  • Organise speech logically and deliver an effective conclusion.
  • Demonstrate fluency and accurate pronunciation under timed conditions.

  • Audio recorder or smartphones for recording
  • Timer
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:

Begin with a quick video clip of a student delivering a short talk about a famous landmark. Ask learners to identify which parts of the talk were facts, expansions, and opinions. Explain that today they will master a five‑step structure that lets them communicate information, develop ideas, and state opinions confidently.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students list three facts about a familiar tourist attraction and share with a partner to activate prior knowledge.
  2. Teacher modelling (7') – Demonstrate a 1‑minute monologue, highlighting the introduction, factual segment, expansion, opinion, and conclusion.
  3. Guided practice – Information‑gap activity (10') – Pairs exchange different fact sheets and use linking‑device cards to convey missing details.
  4. Expansion drill (8') – “Expand the Sentence” task; each student adds at least three expansion phrases to a simple sentence.
  5. Timed speaking task (12') – Individual 1‑minute presentation on a chosen attraction; record for later review.
  6. Peer feedback (8') – Using a checklist, partners comment on use of linking devices, clarity of facts, and justification of opinions.
  7. Whole‑class reflection (5') – Discuss common strengths and areas to improve, reinforcing the five‑step structure.
Conclusion:

Summarise the five‑step speaking framework and remind students of the key linking phrases they practiced. For the exit ticket, each learner writes one new expansion phrase they will use in their next talk. Homework: prepare a 2‑minute spoken description of another tourist attraction, applying the same structure.
