| Subject: English as a Second Language |
| Lesson Topic: select and organise relevant information and ideas into coherent text using appropriate linking devices |
Learning Objective/s:
- Identify the task requirements and target audience for a writing piece.
- Select relevant ideas and organise them using brainstorming, mind‑maps and outlines.
- Apply a range of linking devices to create cohesive paragraphs.
- Produce a 150‑word article that demonstrates logical paragraphing and coherence.
- Self‑evaluate the draft with a coherence checklist and peer feedback.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector or interactive whiteboard
- Printed handouts of linking‑device tables
- Brainstorming & outline worksheets
- Sample article excerpt for modelling
- Coherence & cohesion checklist
- Pens/pencils and paper
|
Introduction:
Start with a brief discussion asking why clear organisation matters in exam writing, linking the idea to IGCSE criteria. Review the success criteria: students will select relevant ideas, organise them logically, and use appropriate linking devices. This activates prior knowledge of paragraph structure and sets the focus for the lesson.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑now (5'): Students read a short paragraph lacking links and note where cohesion is missing.
- Mini‑lecture (10'): Explain the categories of linking devices and the three‑part paragraph structure using the projector.
- Guided practice (15'): In pairs, students brainstorm ideas for the article topic, create a quick mind‑map, and produce a linear outline while the teacher circulates.
- Independent writing (20'): Learners write a 150‑word article, applying the outline and a variety of linking devices, then check their work with the coherence checklist.
- Peer review & feedback (10'): Students swap drafts, use the checklist to give oral feedback, and the teacher leads a brief debrief.
|
Conclusion:
Recap the steps of planning, linking and checking for cohesion. For an exit ticket, each student writes one linking device they used and explains its purpose. Assign homework: revise the article incorporating peer feedback and submit a polished version.
