Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: how businesses may respond to environmental issues
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe why environmental issues are important for businesses.
  • Identify key environmental challenges that affect organisations.
  • Explain the main drivers that motivate businesses to act on environmental concerns.
  • Evaluate a range of business responses such as eco‑efficiency, recycling, renewable energy, and CSR.
  • Apply a decision‑making framework to propose suitable actions for a case study.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed case‑study worksheets
  • Slide deck summarising key concepts
  • Flip chart and markers
  • Internet access for research examples
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip showing recent news about plastic waste in oceans to capture interest.
Ask students to recall how they have seen businesses respond to environmental concerns in everyday life.
Explain that today they will explore why these issues matter to firms and how companies can turn challenges into strategic opportunities.
Success will be measured by their ability to analyse drivers and propose suitable responses.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list local environmental problems they notice and share examples (check understanding).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Teacher presents why environmental issues matter to business and outlines key drivers using slides (note‑taking).
  3. Group activity – case study analysis (15'): Pairs examine a short manufacturing case, identify relevant issues and drivers, and complete a worksheet.
  4. Strategy brainstorming (10'): Groups generate possible business responses on sticky notes and discuss as a class.
  5. Evaluation & presentation (15'): Each group selects two responses, evaluates benefits and challenges using the summary table, and presents findings (peer feedback).
  6. Quick quiz (5'): Kahoot/exit ticket with three multiple‑choice questions on definitions and drivers (formative check).
Conclusion:
Summarise how regulatory, market and ethical drivers shape business decisions and how the range of responses can create competitive advantage.
Students complete an exit ticket stating one new strategy they could recommend to a local business.
Assign homework to research a real company’s recent environmental initiative and prepare a brief summary for the next lesson.
