Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: problems caused by communication barriers
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify at least three types of communication barriers in a business.
  • Explain how each barrier can lead to specific operational problems.
  • Analyse case scenarios to determine the impact of barriers on productivity and costs.
  • Propose practical strategies to reduce or eliminate communication barriers.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed case‑study handouts
  • Barrier identification worksheet
  • PowerPoint slides on barrier types
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:

Begin by asking students to recall a recent situation where a message was misunderstood at work or school. Connect this to their prior knowledge of basic communication models and highlight that today they will explore why such misunderstandings occur. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to list common barriers, link them to real business problems, and suggest ways to overcome them.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Starter – Think‑pair‑share (5'): Students discuss a personal miscommunication example.
  2. Direct teaching (10'): Present the six types of communication barriers using slides and a diagram.
  3. Guided practice (10'): In groups, analyse a supplied case study and complete a table matching barriers to problems.
  4. Whole‑class debrief (8'): Groups share findings; teacher clarifies misconceptions.
  5. Strategy brainstorming (7'): Teams devise two actions to reduce a selected barrier; record ideas on sticky notes.
  6. Check for understanding (5'): Quick Kahoot quiz or exit ticket asking for one barrier and its likely impact.
Conclusion:

Summarise how each barrier can disrupt operations, increase costs, and damage morale. Collect exit tickets to gauge individual understanding, and assign homework: write a short paragraph describing a communication barrier observed in a real business and propose two concrete mitigation steps.
