Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: the role of packaging
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key functions of packaging (protection, preservation, convenience, information, promotion, security).
  • Classify primary, secondary and tertiary packaging and explain their purposes.
  • Explain how packaging supports marketing objectives such as brand identity, differentiation and price perception.
  • Analyse environmental considerations and propose sustainable packaging alternatives.
  • Evaluate the impact of packaging on consumer perception and price using case‑study evidence.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed FreshFruit Ltd. case‑study handouts
  • Images of different packaging types (primary, secondary, tertiary)
  • Worksheet with practice questions
  • Sticky notes for exit ticket
Introduction:

Begin with a surprising product that uses unconventional packaging to capture attention. Ask students what they already know about why products are packaged the way they are, linking to prior lessons on product components. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify packaging functions, connect them to marketing goals, and suggest sustainable options.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Quick quiz on the six functions of packaging; answers discussed.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Define packaging, outline primary/secondary/tertiary types and their purposes.
  3. Group activity (15') – In small groups, analyse the FreshFruit Ltd. case study, fill a table linking each packaging element to its function and marketing objective.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10') – Groups share findings; teacher highlights how packaging influences brand identity, differentiation and price perception, then introduces sustainability considerations.
  5. Worksheet & exit ticket (5') – Students answer two practice questions and write one sustainable packaging suggestion on a sticky note.
Conclusion:

Recap the six functions of packaging and how they align with marketing objectives and environmental concerns. Collect the sticky‑note exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: research a real product’s packaging and prepare a brief report on its sustainability features.
