Lesson Topic: Know and understand card fraud including shoulder surfing, card cloning, key logging
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how shoulder surfing, card cloning, and key logging obtain card information.
  • Identify typical environments and targets for each fraud technique.
  • Explain at least three prevention measures for each method.
  • Evaluate the importance of reporting suspicious equipment or behaviour.
  • Apply safe computing practices to reduce the risk of key logging.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts summarising the three fraud techniques
  • Sample images of ATM skimmers and key‑logger devices
  • Laptop with internet access for video demo
  • Checklist worksheet for students
 Introduction:
Begin with a short video showing a person’s PIN being observed at an ATM, prompting students to consider how easy it is to capture card data. Ask learners to share any personal experiences of seeing suspicious devices or being asked to enter passwords in public. Explain that today they will explore three common card‑fraud methods and the actions they can take to protect themselves.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Students list ways criminals could steal card details; brief sharing.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Overview of shoulder surfing with a privacy‑screen demonstration.
  3. Group activity (12') – Examine skimmer images, identify clues and list prevention steps.
  4. Key‑logger demo (10') – Show a harmless software key‑logger screenshot; discuss installation methods and defenses.
  5. Comparison table analysis (8') – In pairs, fill a chart summarising techniques, targets, and safeguards.
  6. Quick quiz (5') – Kahoot/exit‑ticket with three scenario questions to check understanding.
Conclusion:
Summarise the three fraud techniques and the key prevention actions discussed. Have students complete an exit ticket describing one habit they will change to avoid card fraud. Assign homework to research a recent news story about card fraud and write a brief reflection.
