Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: Describe the dietary importance of each of the main food groups and of water and dietary fibre.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the role of each main food group (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) in providing energy and nutrients.
  • Explain the importance of water and dietary fibre for physiological functions and health.
  • Identify key sources of vitamins and minerals and the consequences of their deficiencies.
  • Compare the functions of soluble and insoluble fibre and their impact on digestion and disease prevention.
  • Apply knowledge to construct a balanced diet plate.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts with food‑group tables
  • Food‑group flash cards or images
  • Worksheet for individual activity
  • Diagram of a balanced plate
  • Water bottles for demonstration
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What did you have for breakfast today?” to activate prior knowledge of food choices. Explain that understanding the nutritional role of each food group, water and fibre helps us make healthier decisions. Outline the success criteria: students will describe functions, sources and deficiency effects, and design a balanced plate.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5’) – Students list foods they ate yesterday; share responses; teacher records on board.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15’) – Overview of main food groups, water and fibre using slides and a balanced‑plate diagram.
  3. Interactive group activity (20’) – Groups receive food cards and create a poster of a balanced plate, noting functions and sources.
  4. Guided Q&A / checking understanding (10’) – Teacher asks probing questions, uses quick‑poll responses.
  5. Worksheet completion (10’) – Individual task matching nutrients to functions and identifying deficiency symptoms.
  6. Summary discussion (5’) – Review key points and clarify misconceptions.
  7. Exit ticket (5’) – Students write one personal dietary change they will make and why.
Conclusion:
Recap the essential roles of each food group, water and fibre and how they contribute to overall health. Students complete an exit ticket stating a personal dietary improvement, reinforcing retrieval. For homework, keep a one‑day food diary and analyse it against the balanced‑plate guidelines.
