Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: Processes: pattern drafting, cutting, joining, finishing
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the four key textile processes and their purpose.
  • Apply pattern‑drafting techniques to create accurate templates with appropriate allowances.
  • Demonstrate safe cutting methods and select suitable tools for different fabrics.
  • Choose and execute appropriate joining methods for given fabric types.
  • Evaluate finishing techniques to ensure the product meets the design brief.
Materials Needed:
  • Drafting paper or tracing paper
  • Rulers (metal, flexible, L‑shaped) and measuring tape
  • French curve, compass, protractor, drafting pens
  • Scissors, rotary cutter and cutting mat
  • Tailor’s chalk and pins
  • Sewing machine or hand‑sewing needles and thread
  • Iron and pressing board
  • Sample fabric and muslin for prototype
Introduction:

Begin with a quick visual of a finished garment and ask students which stages they think were involved. Review their prior knowledge of pattern making and stitching, then outline today’s success criteria: students will draft a simple pattern, cut fabric safely, join pieces, and apply a finishing technique.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students list the four textile processes from memory on a sticky note.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Teacher explains pattern drafting steps, showing examples of seam and hem allowances.
  3. Guided drafting activity (15') – Pupils draft a basic bodice block on paper, adding required allowances and labeling pieces.
  4. Cutting demonstration (10') – Teacher models safe fabric layout, pinning, and cutting using scissors and a rotary cutter.
  5. Joining practice (15') – Students sew two fabric pieces together using a backstitch, then check seam strength.
  6. Finishing workshop (10') – Apply hemming, press the seam, and complete a finishing checklist.
  7. Exit ticket (5') – Each student writes one key safety rule and one factor influencing the choice of joining method.
Conclusion:

Recap the four processes, highlighting how accurate drafting reduces waste and how safe cutting and appropriate joining affect product quality. Collect exit tickets as a quick retrieval check, and assign homework to calculate fabric requirements for a simple skirt using the formula provided in the notes.
