Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Mandarin Chinese
Lesson Topic: Time expressions (e.g. telling the time, days, days of the week, months, seasons)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and correctly pronounce numbers 0‑60 for hours and minutes.
  • Construct Mandarin sentences to tell time, including half‑hours, quarters, and “差一刻”.
  • Use Mandarin terms for AM/PM, days of the week, dates, months, and seasons in spoken and written form.
  • Apply time‑related vocabulary in short dialogues and written exercises.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed handouts with vocabulary tables (numbers, days, months, seasons)
  • Clock‑face flashcards labelled with Chinese hour words
  • Audio recordings of time expressions
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Worksheet containing matching, fill‑in‑the‑blank and quiz items
  • Timer for activity management
Introduction:

Begin by asking students, “What time is it now in Mandarin?” to spark curiosity. Review the numbers they already know from previous lessons, linking them to hour and minute usage. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to tell and write any time, date, and day of the week accurately.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students write the current time on a mini‑whiteboard using the pattern “现在是 … 点 … 分”.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Review numbers 0‑60, the structure “现在是 + hour + 点 (+ minute + 分)”, and AM/PM markers (上午, 下午, 晚上).
  3. Guided Practice (15'): Clock‑face activity – label a large clock with Chinese hour words, then add “半”, “一刻”, “差一刻” to demonstrate half‑hours and quarters.
  4. Pair Role‑Play (10'): Students ask and answer schedule questions (e.g., “你每天几点起床?”) using the new structures.
  5. Worksheet Activity (10'): Matching exercise, fill‑in‑the‑blank dates, and short reading passage extraction.
  6. Quick Quiz (5'): Multiple‑choice question on “8:45 am” to check understanding of “差一刻”.
Conclusion:

Recap the key patterns for telling time, dates, and days of the week. For the exit ticket, each student writes one sentence describing their daily schedule in Mandarin. Assign homework: complete an online quiz on time expressions and write tomorrow’s full date (year‑month‑day) in Chinese.
