Lesson Topic: Be able to hide and display rows and columns
Learning Objective/s:
  • Hide selected rows and columns using menu commands.
  • Unhide rows and columns using both the context menu and the ribbon.
  • Apply keyboard shortcuts to hide rows and columns efficiently.
  • Select the correct surrounding cells when unhiding to avoid errors.
  • Demonstrate how hidden rows/columns improve spreadsheet readability and presentation.
Materials Needed:
  • Computer lab with Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc installed.
  • Projector and screen for teacher demonstration.
  • Handout with practice tasks and assessment checklist.
  • Sample spreadsheet file containing data for the activity.
  • Keyboard‑shortcut reference sheet (optional).
 Introduction:
Spreadsheets can become cluttered, making it hard to read key results. Review how you currently select rows and columns, then explain that today you will learn to hide and display data for clearer reports. Success will be measured by students correctly hiding and unhiding rows/columns using both menu commands and shortcuts.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick quiz on reasons for hiding rows/columns and recall of cell‑selection basics.
  2. Teacher demonstration (10'): Show how to hide rows and columns via the ribbon and using keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl + 9, Ctrl + 0).
  3. Guided practice (10'): Students hide rows 3‑5 and columns B‑C using the menu; teacher circulates to check selections.
  4. Unhide activity (10'): Students unhide the hidden rows/columns first with shortcuts (Ctrl + Shift + 9/0) then with the menu, reinforcing both methods.
  5. Extension & check (5'): Introduce non‑contiguous hide (Ctrl‑click) and run through the assessment checklist.
Conclusion:
We reviewed why hiding rows/columns improves readability and practiced both menu and shortcut methods. For the exit ticket, write one keyboard shortcut you used today and the action it performs. Homework: create a new worksheet, hide at least two different rows and columns, then unhide them before the next class.
