Lesson Plan
Grade: A-Level Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: reasons for giving aid
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main altruistic and self‑interest motivations for donor countries to provide aid.
  • Explain how different types of aid (grants, concessional loans, technical assistance, debt relief) align with these motivations.
  • Analyse the benefits and drawbacks of aid for both donor and recipient nations.
  • Evaluate criticisms of aid and discuss conditions for effective aid delivery.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of the “Reasons for Giving Aid” table
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Sticky notes for brainstorming
  • Digital presentation slides
Introduction:

Begin with a vivid scenario: a country devastated by an earthquake receives food, doctors, and new schools from abroad. Ask students what they think motivates such assistance. Link this to their prior knowledge of trade and development, and state that by the end of the lesson they will be able to list and explain the key reasons donors give aid.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write as many reasons for international aid as they can on sticky notes; share and cluster ideas.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Present the four economic theories (altruism, self‑interest, reciprocity/trade‑creation, security) with real‑world examples.
  3. Table analysis activity (15') – In groups, match the reasons, descriptions, and typical examples from the handout; discuss findings.
  4. Types of aid matching (10') – Groups link grants, concessional loans, technical assistance, and debt relief to the motivations identified.
  5. Benefits & criticisms debate (10') – Half the class argues the benefits to donors/recipients; the other half presents criticisms and limitations.
  6. Summary diagram creation (5') – Groups sketch a flowchart showing donor motives, aid types, and outcomes.
  7. Exit ticket (5') – Individually write one primary reason for aid and one potential drawback.
Conclusion:

Recap the four main motivations and how they connect to specific aid instruments. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: each student researches a recent international aid package and evaluates which motivation predominates.
