Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: Wildfire hazards: distribution, causes, impacts, management
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the global distribution of wildfires and identify high‑risk regions.
  • Explain the natural and human causes of wildfires and the components of the fire danger index.
  • Analyse environmental, social and economic impacts of wildfire events.
  • Evaluate key management strategies, including fuel management, land‑use planning and post‑fire rehabilitation.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for slides/diagrams
  • World map or digital GIS layer showing fire‑prone regions
  • Handout summarising causes, impacts and management strategies
  • Fire‑triangle diagram (printed or displayed)
  • Worksheet with case‑study questions
  • Calculator for simple FDI calculations
Introduction:

Begin with a striking image of a recent wildfire and ask students what factors they think contributed to its spread. Connect this to prior knowledge of climate zones and fuel types studied earlier. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to map fire‑prone areas, interpret the fire danger index and propose management actions.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Think‑pair‑share on the opening image; list possible causes of the fire.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Present global distribution using the map; highlight regions and fire seasons.
  3. Interactive activity (12'): Students calculate a simple fire danger index from provided temperature, humidity, wind and fuel data.
  4. Group analysis (15'): Case‑study worksheet – identify and rank environmental, social and economic impacts.
  5. Management workshop (12'): Teams design a fire‑management plan for a chosen region and present key actions.
  6. Whole‑class debrief (6'): Summarise main concepts and clarify misconceptions.
Conclusion:

Elicit a brief recap of the main concepts, asking learners to state one impact and one management measure. Collect exit tickets where each student writes the fire danger index formula and one real‑world application. Assign homework to research a recent wildfire event and prepare a short report linking causes, impacts and mitigation.
