Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: History
Lesson Topic: Recall, select and deploy historical knowledge appropriately and effectively
Learning Objective/s:
  • Recall key dates, figures, events and terminology across the syllabus.
  • Select the most relevant information from a larger body of knowledge.
  • Deploy factual information accurately in exam answers, showing cause‑and‑effect and significance.
  • Use timelines, flash‑cards and mind‑maps to organise and retrieve facts.
  • Self‑check responses against the AO1 checklist for completeness and relevance.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed timeline handouts
  • Set of AO1 flash‑cards (dates, treaties, figures)
  • Worksheet with AO1 practice questions
  • Past‑paper excerpts
  • Pens / pencils
Introduction:

Start with a rapid‑fire quiz on well‑known dates to capture attention. Review students’ existing knowledge of major European events and link it to today’s focus. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to retrieve facts quickly, choose the most relevant ones, and use them correctly in answers.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now quiz (5’) – rapid recall of famous dates on the board.
  2. Mini‑lecture on AO1 requirements and the checklist (10’) – teacher models how to select and deploy facts.
  3. Timeline building activity (15’) – groups create visual timelines for assigned periods using handouts.
  4. Flash‑card challenge (10’) – pairs test each other on dates, treaties and key figures.
  5. Past‑paper AO1 practice (15’) – students answer a question, then peer‑check using the AO1 checklist.
  6. Reflection & exit ticket (5’) – each student writes one fact they found tricky and a revision plan.
Conclusion:

Summarise the five strategies (timelines, flash‑cards, mind‑maps, checklist, practice questions) that support strong AO1 performance. Collect exit tickets as a quick retrieval check. For homework, students complete a five‑bullet summary of the next syllabus topic and continue reviewing flash‑cards.
