Lesson Topic: Know and understand characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) including tracking stock, passports, automobiles, contactless payment

  • Analyse how RFID is used for stock tracking, passports, vehicles and contactless payments.
  • Evaluate privacy and cost considerations when implementing RFID solutions.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Computer with internet access for video demo
  • RFID tag and reader demo kit (or video of one)
  • Handout summarising RFID characteristics and applications
  • Worksheet with case‑study questions
 Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: how many students have tapped a contactless card or used an e‑passport? Explain that RFID powers these everyday interactions and that today we’ll explore how the technology works, its benefits and challenges. By the end of the lesson students will be able to identify key components, list major uses and assess pros and cons.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students list devices they use that rely on RFID and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Explain RFID components, tag types and read ranges using slides and a demo kit.
  3. Group activity (12'): Analyse a case study (e.g., warehouse inventory) and complete a advantages‑vs‑disadvantages chart.
  4. Class discussion (8'): Groups present findings; teacher highlights key points across applications.
  5. Interactive simulation (10'): Watch a short video of RFID tag reading and discuss security/privacy issues.
  6. Formative check (5'): Quick Kahoot quiz on terminology and concepts.
Conclusion:
Summarise that RFID enables fast, line‑of‑sight‑free identification but requires careful cost and privacy management. For exit, each student writes one advantage and one disadvantage on a sticky note. Homework: research a real‑world RFID implementation and prepare a brief report.
