Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: State the main features used to place all organisms into one of the five kingdoms: animal, plant, fungus, prokaryote, protoctist.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the cellular organization, nutrition type, cell‑wall composition, locomotion and reproductive strategies that differentiate the five kingdoms.
  • Compare and contrast the key features of each kingdom to correctly classify given organisms.
  • Apply a decision‑flowchart to assign unknown organisms to the appropriate kingdom.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed classification worksheets
  • Diagram of the five‑kingdom flowchart
  • Sample images of organisms (photos or slides)
  • Markers and chart paper
  • Student notebooks
Introduction:
Begin with a quick think‑pair‑share: students list familiar living things and guess their kingdoms. Review prior knowledge of cell types and nutrition. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify the main features used to place organisms into the five kingdoms.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write three characteristics of any animal and plant on sticky notes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Teacher presents the five‑kingdom criteria using slides and a flowchart.
  3. Guided practice (15') – Whole class fills a table with the key features for each kingdom.
  4. Interactive classification activity (15') – Small groups receive organism cards and use the flowchart to determine the kingdom; teacher circulates for questioning.
  5. Check for understanding (5') – Quick quiz (Kahoot or show of hands) on distinguishing features.
  6. Summary discussion (5') – Groups share challenging classifications and clarify misconceptions.
Conclusion:
Recap the five key criteria and how they lead to correct kingdom placement. Students complete an exit ticket by writing one organism and the feature that determined its kingdom. For homework, they research a local species and prepare a brief classification report.
