Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: Causes of poverty: age
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how age influences poverty incidence and depth in different economies.
  • Analyse poverty rates and the poverty‑gap index across age groups using provided data.
  • Evaluate age‑specific policy measures aimed at reducing poverty.
  • Compare the challenges faced by children, working‑age adults, and the elderly.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Slide presentation (PowerPoint/Google Slides)
  • Printed data tables (age‑group poverty rates)
  • Worksheet with case‑study questions
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Calculators (optional)
Introduction:

Begin with a striking fact: over half of the elderly in low‑income countries live below the poverty line, while children also face high rates. Ask students to recall how income sources differ across life stages and why this matters for poverty. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to interpret age‑disaggregated poverty data and assess targeted policies.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – quick quiz on definitions of poverty and age groups.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – present age‑specific poverty statistics and the poverty‑gap index using slides.
  3. Data analysis activity (15') – groups examine the provided table, calculate differences, and answer why rates vary.
  4. Policy design discussion (10') – each group proposes one intervention for a specific age group and justifies it.
  5. Whole‑class debrief & formative check (5') – teacher summarises key points and collects an exit ticket.
Conclusion:

Summarise that age shapes earning potential, dependency and social protection, leading to distinct poverty patterns. Have students complete an exit ticket stating one policy they think is most effective for a chosen age group. Assign homework to research a real‑world program addressing age‑related poverty and prepare a brief summary.
