Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: Changes and challenges: population pressure, exploitation, climate change, management strategies
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how population pressure, resource exploitation, and climate change affect tropical environments.
  • Analyse the links between these challenges and environmental degradation.
  • Evaluate management strategies such as protected areas, sustainable land‑use, and community‑based approaches.
  • Apply knowledge to propose a mitigation plan for a specific tropical region.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint presentation with diagrams
  • Printed summary handout (challenge table)
  • World map or digital GIS tool
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
  • Markers and flip chart
Introduction:
Begin with a striking image of a deforested tropical area and ask students what they think caused the change. Connect to prior learning on climate zones and remind them that many of the world’s poorest live in the tropics. Explain that today they will explore how population growth, resource extraction and climate change interact, and they will be assessed on their ability to suggest realistic management actions.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students create a quick mind‑map on “What challenges face tropical regions?” using sticky notes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Present key facts on population pressure, resource exploitation, and climate change with slides.
  3. Group analysis (15'): Each group receives a case study (e.g., Amazon, Congo, SE Asia) and fills a table linking drivers to impacts.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10'): Groups share findings; teacher highlights connections and management options.
  5. Strategy design activity (15'): Groups draft a brief management plan (protected area, sustainable land‑use, community role) on flip chart.
  6. Check for understanding (5'): Exit ticket – one sentence summarising the most effective strategy for their case.
Conclusion:
Summarise how population pressure, exploitation and climate change reinforce each other and why integrated management is essential. Collect exit tickets and remind students that the homework is to write a one‑page reflection proposing a policy recommendation for a tropical country of their choice.
