Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: Describe what is meant by a balanced diet and why it is important.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the components of a balanced diet and the role of each nutrient group.
  • Explain why a balanced diet is essential for growth, energy provision, and disease prevention.
  • Analyse food‑group information to construct a balanced meal plate.
  • Evaluate personal food choices against the criteria for a balanced diet.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck / printed handouts on food groups
  • Sample food items or picture cards
  • Worksheet for plate‑planning activity
  • Markers and chart paper
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:
Ask students to imagine a day without their favourite snack to spark curiosity.
Recall the previous lesson on macronutrients and micronutrients as background knowledge.
Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to describe a balanced diet and design a balanced plate.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list the foods they ate yesterday and share briefly to activate prior knowledge.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Define a balanced diet and review essential nutrients using slides and a plate diagram.
  3. Interactive sorting (15'): In groups, match food‑card images to nutrient categories on chart paper.
  4. Plate‑planning activity (15'): Students complete a worksheet to create a balanced plate; teacher circulates for feedback.
  5. Whole‑class discussion (10'): Discuss why balance matters for growth, energy, and disease prevention.
  6. Quick check (5'): Kahoot quiz or exit‑ticket question summarising key points.
Conclusion:
Recap the main reasons a balanced diet supports health and wellbeing.
Collect exit tickets where each student writes one personal change they will make to improve their diet.
Assign homework: keep a two‑day food diary and evaluate it against the balanced‑plate model.
