| Lesson Topic: Know and understand purpose and uses of a corporate house style |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe the purpose and benefits of a corporate house style.
- Identify the core components of a house style guide (logo, colour palette, typography, etc.).
- Apply house style guidelines to create a consistent document or slide template.
- Explain the process for developing, publishing, and maintaining a house style guide.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector and screen
- Whiteboard and markers
- Sample corporate house style guide (printed)
- Laptop with presentation software (PowerPoint/Google Slides)
- Worksheets with template exercises
- Internet access for online style guide examples
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual of two identical reports, one styled and one not, to highlight the impact of consistency. Ask students how they recognise a brand’s look and feel from previous experiences. Explain that today they will explore why organisations adopt a house style and what elements it contains. Success will be measured by their ability to analyse a document against the style guide.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑Now (5') – Students compare two sample documents and note differences in branding.
- Mini‑lecture (10') – Define corporate house style, discuss purposes and core components using slides.
- Guided analysis (15') – In pairs, examine a printed house style guide and identify guidelines for logo, colour, typography, etc.; teacher circulates and checks understanding.
- Practical activity (20') – Students adapt a plain Word report into the corporate style using provided templates and style sheet; focus on layout, fonts, colours.
- Whole‑class showcase (5') – Volunteers present their styled document; peer feedback on consistency.
- Reflection & exit ticket (5') – Students write one way a house style saves time and one question they still have.
|
Conclusion:
Summarise that a corporate house style ensures a professional, consistent brand image and streamlines document creation. Reinforce that students can now locate key components of a style guide and apply them to real work. For the exit ticket, they list one element they will use in their next assignment. Homework: draft a one‑page style guide for a fictitious company, covering logo, colours, and typography.
