Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: Commercial processes: production techniques, quality control
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main commercial textile production techniques (weaving, knitting, non‑woven, dyeing/printing, finishing).
  • Explain the purpose and key stages of quality control in textile manufacturing.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the different production techniques.
  • Apply ISO test standards to evaluate fabric properties such as tensile strength and colour fastness.
  • Analyse defect classifications and propose appropriate corrective actions.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout with technique comparison table
  • Sample fabric swatches (woven, knitted, non‑woven)
  • Colour swatch cards
  • QC test data sheets and ISO standards summary
  • Defect classification cards
Introduction:
Begin with a short video of a modern textile factory to capture interest. Ask students to share examples of clothing they own and guess how each was produced, linking to prior knowledge of fabrics. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will identify key production techniques and evaluate quality using recognised standards.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list garments they own and hypothesise the production method.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15'): Overview of weaving, knitting, non‑woven, dyeing/printing, finishing with slides and fabric samples.
  3. Comparative activity (10'): Pairs complete a Venn diagram comparing advantages/disadvantages of each technique (handout).
  4. Quality‑control walkthrough (15'): Explain QC stages, show a tensile‑strength test video, discuss ISO standards.
  5. Defect classification game (10'): Groups sort defect cards into critical, major, minor and suggest corrective actions.
  6. Check for understanding (5'): Quick Kahoot quiz (5 questions).
  7. Summary & exit ticket (5'): Students write one key takeaway and one lingering question on a sticky note.
Conclusion:
Recap the main production techniques and the essential QC stages covered today. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a homework task: research a real textile brand’s quality‑control process and write a short paragraph describing how it aligns with the standards discussed.
