| Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT |
| Lesson Topic: Know and understand the differences and similarities between an extranet, intranet and the internet |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe the key characteristics of the Internet, intranet and extranet.
- Compare and contrast the scope, access control and typical uses of each network type.
- Analyse security considerations and cost implications for each network.
- Evaluate which network type is appropriate for a given organisational scenario.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector and screen
- Whiteboard and markers
- Printed handouts with comparison tables
- Laptop with internet access for demonstration
- Venn diagram template (paper or digital)
- Sticky notes for group activity
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll asking students which online services they use daily to activate prior knowledge of the Internet. Explain that organisations also use private networks and partner‑access networks, leading to the concepts of intranets and extranets. State that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify differences, compare features and select the appropriate network for a scenario.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑now (5’) – Students list three websites they visit and discuss what makes them public.
- Mini‑lecture (10’) – Define Internet, intranet, extranet using slides and real‑world examples.
- Guided comparison (12’) – Work through the feature table in pairs, fill a Venn diagram on the handout.
- Security & cost discussion (8’) – Whole‑class discussion on security concerns and implementation costs.
- Application activity (10’) – Groups receive a scenario and decide which network type to use, justify their choice on sticky notes.
- Check for understanding (5’) – Quick quiz (Kahoot or exit ticket) with three multiple‑choice questions.
|
Conclusion:
Recap the main similarities and the three key differences between the networks. Ask each group to share one justification from their scenario as an exit ticket. Assign homework to research a real company’s intranet or extranet and write a short summary.
