Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand examples of applications software including word processing, spreadsheet, database management systems, control, measurement, applets and apps, video editing, graphics editing, audio editing, computer aided design (CAD)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose and give examples of the major categories of application software.
  • Compare the key features and typical output formats of word processors, spreadsheets, DBMS, and other categories.
  • Identify the most appropriate software for a given task or project.
  • Demonstrate basic navigation of at least two applications (e.g., a word processor and a spreadsheet).
  • Explain how application software relies on system software to function.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Computer lab with internet access
  • Sample files (Word document, Excel sheet, Access database)
  • Pre‑installed applications (Word, Excel, Access, LibreOffice, Audacity, GIMP, AutoCAD trial)
  • Handout summarising software categories
  • Worksheet with matching activity and task cards
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: which apps did you use yesterday and why? Connect this to students’ prior experience with word processors for assignments. Explain that today they will explore a wide range of application software and learn how to select the right tool for any task. Success criteria are listed on the handout.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students write three apps they used last week on sticky notes and share.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of application software categories using a layered diagram.
  3. Guided demo (15'): Demonstrate basic functions of a word processor and a spreadsheet.
  4. Group activity (15'): Teams receive task cards (e.g., create a budget, design a logo) and decide which software best fits, then outline steps.
  5. Exploration stations (15'): Rotate through stations with DBMS, CAD, audio/video editors; complete a short checklist at each.
  6. Class discussion (5'): Share findings and clarify the relationship between application and system software.
  7. Exit ticket (5'): Write one example of software that would solve a given scenario.
Conclusion:

Recap the nine software categories and why each suits specific tasks. Students submit their exit tickets matching scenarios to the appropriate application. Remind them to review the handout and try one new application at home. Homework: research a free alternative for any category and prepare a brief summary.
