Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: the benefits of employment contracts for employers and employees
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key benefits of employment contracts for employers.
  • Explain the advantages employment contracts provide to employees.
  • Identify the main legal controls that must be included in an employment contract.
  • Compare employer and employee perspectives on contract benefits.
  • Apply knowledge by analysing a sample contract for compliance with legal requirements.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of a sample employment contract
  • Worksheet with comparison table
  • Laptop with internet access
  • Sticky notes for group activity
Introduction:

Imagine starting a new job without knowing your pay or notice period. Building on previous lessons about employee rights, students will explore why contracts matter. By the end of the lesson they will be able to list benefits for both parties and explain the essential legal controls.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students list three things they expect to see in a job contract and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Explain the purpose of contracts and outline benefits for employers and employees using a slide.
  3. Group activity (15') – In pairs, analyse the sample contract handout, highlight clauses that deliver each benefit, and complete the comparison worksheet.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10') – Groups present findings; teacher clarifies the statutory legal controls (Employment Rights Act, Minimum Wage, Working Time, Equality Act, Health & Safety).
  5. Interactive quiz (5') – Quick Kahoot/Quizizz to check understanding of legal requirements.
  6. Exit ticket (5') – Each student writes one benefit for employers, one for employees, and one legal control that must be included.
Conclusion:

We recap how employment contracts protect both sides and meet legal standards. The exit tickets will show immediate understanding, and for homework students will read a short case study of a contract dispute and prepare a brief summary of the lessons learned.
