Lesson Plan
Grade: 10 Date: 01/12/2025
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to locate stored files
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the components of a file path (absolute and relative) and identify file extensions.
  • Explain how to use File Explorer/Finder and search functions to locate files on Windows and macOS.
  • Demonstrate how to retrieve a file’s full path via properties or shortcuts.
  • Apply naming and folder‑organisation conventions to improve future file retrieval.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Computer lab with Windows and macOS machines
  • Sample files (documents, images, PDFs)
  • Worksheet with file‑path exercises
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout of common storage locations
Introduction:
Begin with a quick discussion about how students currently find their school assignments on their laptops. Recall previous learning on folders and file extensions. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to locate any file using navigation, search, or properties and record its full path.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list where they usually save homework on their device.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Review file‑path terminology and common storage locations.
  3. Demonstration (12’) – Teacher shows locating a document via File Explorer/Finder navigation and search.
  4. Guided practice (15’) – Pairs use lab computers to locate a set of sample files using different methods; record paths.
  5. Command‑line intro (8’) – Brief demo of cd and dir/ls to locate a file.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Quick quiz on identifying correct absolute paths.
Conclusion:
Summarise the key strategies for locating files and why consistent naming matters. Students complete an exit ticket by writing the absolute path of a given file. Assign homework to organise their personal documents into a logical folder hierarchy and bring a screenshot of the path for the next class.
