Date: 25/02/2026 |
| Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT |
| Lesson Topic: Know and understand fixed and portable solid-state drive (SSD) including SSD, pen drive, flash drive |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe the architecture and operation of fixed and portable solid‑state drives.
- Compare key characteristics (capacity, speed, power use, durability, cost) of fixed SSDs, portable SSDs, pen drives and HDDs.
- Evaluate which storage device best fits a given scenario based on capacity, performance, portability and budget.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector and screen for slides
- Laptop with internet access
- Sample fixed SSD, portable SSD, and USB pen drive
- Printed comparison‑chart handout
- Whiteboard and markers
- Quiz worksheets / exit‑ticket cards
|
Introduction:
Start with a quick poll: “Who used a USB pen drive or external SSD this week?” Capture responses on the board to activate prior knowledge. Briefly outline today’s success criteria – students will be able to describe, compare and choose the appropriate storage device for different tasks.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑Now (5') – Students list all storage devices they own and share one advantage of each.
- Mini‑lecture (10') – Explain SSD technology, differentiating fixed vs. portable SSDs and the role of NAND flash.
- Interactive comparison (12') – Display the comparison table; students fill a Venn diagram highlighting similarities and differences.
- Hands‑on demo (10') – Connect a portable SSD and a pen drive to the laptop, demonstrate file‑transfer speeds and discuss interface impact.
- Guided practice (8') – In pairs, students choose the best device for three real‑world scenarios using a checklist.
- Check for understanding (5') – Quick Kahoot quiz covering key characteristics and selection criteria.
- Summary & Q&A (5') – Recap main points and answer lingering questions.
|
Conclusion:
Summarise how SSDs, portable SSDs, and pen drives differ in speed, capacity, durability and cost. Ask students to write one “exit ticket” stating which device they would recommend for a video‑editing project and why. Assign a brief homework: research the price of a 1 TB portable SSD and compare it to a 1 TB HDD.
