Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan
Grade: A-Level (Year 12) Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: prevalence and risk factors of influenza (flu)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the global prevalence of influenza using case, hospitalization, and mortality data.
  • Identify the main risk factors that increase susceptibility to influenza infection.
  • Explain how seasonal patterns and transmission dynamics influence outbreak severity.
  • Evaluate surveillance systems and control measures used to reduce influenza impact.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for data tables and diagrams.
  • Printed handouts with prevalence tables and risk‑factor summary.
  • World map or digital mapping tool for regional analysis.
  • Markers and flip chart for group brainstorming.
  • Access to WHO GISRS website (or screenshots) for surveillance examples.
Introduction:
Did you know that each year influenza kills up to 650,000 people worldwide? Building on previous lessons about disease transmission, students will explore why some populations are more affected than others. By the end of the lesson you will be able to interpret prevalence data, list major risk factors, and suggest appropriate control measures.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Examine a world map showing influenza case numbers and note regional patterns (quick check).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Present global prevalence data and key risk factors using slides and handouts.
  3. Group activity (15'): Teams analyse a selected region’s risk profile and calculate the attack rate with the provided formula.
  4. Surveillance & control discussion (10'): Review WHO GISRS, vaccination programmes, and non‑pharmaceutical interventions; whole‑class Q&A.
  5. Formative quiz (5'): Kahoot/exit‑ticket with three questions to assess the learning objectives.
Conclusion:
We recap the main prevalence figures, the most significant risk factors, and how surveillance informs control strategies. Students complete a brief exit ticket summarising one new insight and one remaining question. For homework, they will research the latest influenza vaccine composition and prepare a short paragraph on its relevance to the current season.
