Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: Describe the functions of cell structures in plant, animal and bacterial cells.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main functions of major cell structures in plant, animal and bacterial cells.
  • Compare and contrast the presence and roles of organelles across the three cell types.
  • Explain how cell structure relates to processes such as photosynthesis, respiration and transport.
  • Identify organelles on labelled diagrams and state their functions.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • PowerPoint/Google Slides presentation with cell diagrams
  • Handouts of labelled plant, animal and bacterial cell diagrams
  • Worksheet with comparative table activity
  • Microscopes and prepared slides of onion epidermis and cheek cells (optional)
  • Sticky notes or index cards for quick recall
Introduction:

Project a clear image of a plant, animal and bacterial cell to capture interest.

Ask learners what they already know about cell parts and how these might differ between organisms.

State that by the end of the lesson they will be able to describe each structure’s function and compare the three cell types.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5 min): Students write as many cell structures as they can recall on sticky notes; quick sharing.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15 min): Teacher presents labelled diagrams of plant, animal and bacterial cells, highlighting each organelle and its function.
  3. Guided comparison (10 min): In pairs, students fill a comparative table of organelle functions for the three cell types and discuss similarities/differences.
  4. Interactive labeling activity (10 min): Students individually label printed cell diagrams; peers check for accuracy.
  5. Concept check (5 min): Quick quiz via Kahoot or exit cards with three key questions.
  6. Recap & homework briefing (5 min): Summarise key points and assign the worksheet for further practice.
Conclusion:

Reiterate that organelle function determines the role of each cell type, emphasizing the unique features of plant and bacterial cells.

Students complete an exit ticket naming one organelle and its function for each cell type.

For homework, they finish the comparative worksheet and create a set of flashcards for quick revision.
