Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: reasons for globalisation: improved transport links, technological change including communication, free trade agreements, newly industrialised countries
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the four main reasons for globalisation.
  • Explain how each driver influences business decisions.
  • Analyse real‑world examples of transport, technology, FTAs and NICs.
  • Evaluate opportunities and risks for firms entering global markets.
  • Apply the concepts to identify a potential export market for a local business.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint presentation with diagrams
  • Printed summary handout (key reasons table)
  • World map or digital globe
  • Sticky notes and markers
  • Exit ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “Which products in your backpack came from another country?” Use responses to link prior knowledge of international trade. Explain that today’s focus is on why globalisation happens and how businesses respond. Success criteria: students will be able to name and explain the four key drivers and apply them to a business scenario.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list global products they use; share a few examples.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the four drivers with visuals and short case examples.
  3. Group activity (15’) – Teams receive a case study of a UK apparel firm and match each driver to specific business decisions on sourcing, marketing and logistics; complete worksheet.
  4. Whole‑class debrief (10’) – Groups present findings; teacher clarifies misconceptions.
  5. Interactive quiz (5’) – Kahoot/Quizizz to check recall of key features and examples.
  6. Exit ticket (5’) – Write one way a future business could use one of the drivers of globalisation.
Conclusion:

Recap the four reasons and their impact on business strategy. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and address any lingering questions. For homework, ask students to research a recent free‑trade agreement and write a brief paragraph on how it could affect a local company.
