Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: Definitions, advantages and disadvantages of nationalisation
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the definition of nationalisation and the circumstances that prompt governments to adopt it.
  • Explain at least three advantages and three disadvantages of nationalisation for an economy.
  • Analyse a given scenario to decide whether nationalisation is an appropriate policy response.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint slides summarising key points
  • Printed handout with advantage/disadvantage tables
  • Flowchart diagram of the decision‑making process
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “Which services in our community would you be uncomfortable leaving to private companies?” Use responses to link to the concept of public goods and segue into nationalisation. Clarify that today’s success criteria are to define nationalisation, list its pros and cons, and apply a decision framework.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students write a one‑sentence definition of nationalisation on a sticky note.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Present definition, reasons for nationalisation, and show the advantage/disadvantage tables.
  3. Guided analysis (12'): In pairs, examine a case study (e.g., water supply) and fill a T‑chart of pros and cons.
  4. Decision‑making flowchart activity (8'): Groups use the provided diagram to decide if nationalisation is appropriate, justifying their choice.
  5. Whole‑class debrief (5'): Share conclusions, highlight common misconceptions.
  6. Formative check (5'): Quick Kahoot quiz covering key points.
Conclusion:

Summarise the definition, key advantages and disadvantages, and the criteria for when nationalisation works best. Students complete an exit ticket stating one advantage and one disadvantage they find most compelling. Assign homework: write a short paragraph evaluating whether nationalisation of public transport would benefit our city.
