Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand school management systems are used to manage learner registration and attendance
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose and key functions of a school management system for registration and attendance.
  • Identify the data captured during learner registration and explain how it is stored.
  • Demonstrate how to record daily attendance using an SMS and interpret attendance reports.
  • Evaluate the benefits of using an SMS compared to paper‑based processes.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and computer with internet access
  • Demo school management system (software or screenshots)
  • Registration worksheet for each learner
  • Digital attendance template
  • Handout showing Learners and Attendance database tables
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “How many of you have ever signed a paper attendance register?” Use the responses to highlight the limitations of paper records. Remind learners of previous lessons on data entry and database basics. Explain that today they will discover how a school management system streamlines registration and attendance, and they will be able to demonstrate both processes by the end of the lesson.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students list three advantages and three disadvantages of paper‑based registration and attendance.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Overview of SMS purpose, key modules, and data fields for registration (personal & academic data).
  3. Guided practice (15') – Teacher demonstrates entering a new learner in the demo system; students replicate on their laptops using the registration worksheet.
  4. Attendance module demo (10') – Show how teachers mark presence/absence, generate alerts, and export reports.
  5. Group activity (15') – Teams create a workflow diagram using the provided flowchart template and discuss the benefits listed in the source notes.
  6. Check for understanding (5') – Quick Kahoot quiz or exit‑ticket question covering the four learning objectives.
Conclusion:

Summarise how an SMS captures registration data, automates attendance tracking, and produces real‑time reports. Ask students to write one key takeaway on an index card as an exit ticket. For homework, learners will research a real‑world school management system and prepare a short paragraph on how it supports learner registration and attendance.
