Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Mandarin Chinese
Lesson Topic: Home life (e.g. housing and locations, rooms and furniture, household appliances)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and correctly pronounce key vocabulary for housing types, rooms, furniture and household appliances.
  • Construct sentences describing the location of a home and the layout of rooms using the provided sentence patterns.
  • Write a short descriptive paragraph (80‑100 Chinese characters) about one’s own home, integrating vocabulary and structures.
  • Demonstrate listening comprehension by matching spoken descriptions to pictures of rooms and appliances.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint slides with vocabulary tables and images
  • Printed handouts (vocabulary list, integrated practice worksheet)
  • Flashcards of rooms, furniture and appliances
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Audio recordings of model sentences
Introduction:

Begin with a quick picture‑guess game to activate prior knowledge of home‑related words. Ask students to share any Mandarin terms they already know about their house. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to describe their own home in a short paragraph and meet the success criteria displayed on the board.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list any Mandarin words for rooms or furniture on a sticky note.
  2. Vocabulary presentation (10'): Teacher projects slides, pronounces each term, students repeat chorally and record on their handouts.
  3. Sentence‑pattern modelling (8'): Teacher demonstrates the four key structures; students practice by completing short oral drills.
  4. Guided practice (10'): Integrated worksheet – fill‑in‑the‑blank sentences and create a 2‑sentence description of a room.
  5. Pair speaking activity (7'): Learners describe their favourite room to a partner, using at least three new vocabulary items.
  6. Consolidation & feedback (5'): Whole‑class sharing of selected descriptions; teacher corrects pronunciation and grammar.
Conclusion:

Recap the four sentence patterns and the new vocabulary, checking that each student can produce a correct sentence about where they live. For the exit ticket, ask learners to write one sentence stating the type of housing and its location. Homework: compose an 80‑100 character paragraph describing their home, using at least five pieces of vocabulary from today’s lesson.
