Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 01/12/2025
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to set the orientation to portrait or landscape
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify when to use portrait versus landscape orientation for printed spreadsheets.
  • Demonstrate how to change page orientation in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc.
  • Evaluate print previews and adjust margins or scaling to ensure data fits correctly.
  • Apply orientation settings to produce a professional‑looking printed worksheet.
Materials Needed:
  • Computer with internet access.
  • Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc installed.
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard.
  • Sample spreadsheet files for practice.
  • Printed handouts of step‑by‑step guides.
  • Worksheet for exit ticket.
Introduction:

Begin with a quick question: “When you print a spreadsheet, why might the page look cramped or cut off?” Review students’ prior experience with printing worksheets and highlight the importance of choosing the correct orientation for readability and professionalism. Explain that today they will learn to set portrait or landscape orientation in three common spreadsheet programs and will be assessed through a brief exit ticket.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’): Examine a printed spreadsheet and note any orientation problems; discuss observations.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’): Explain portrait vs. landscape, when each is appropriate, using projector examples.
  3. Guided demonstration (15’): Show step‑by‑step orientation changes in Excel, then Google Sheets, then LibreOffice Calc, inviting questions.
  4. Hands‑on practice (15’): In pairs, students change the orientation of a sample workbook in each program and verify using Print Preview.
  5. Check for understanding (5’): Quick quiz on menu paths and best‑use scenarios.
  6. Exit ticket (5’): Write one scenario for choosing landscape and one for portrait; submit before leaving.
Conclusion:

Summarise that selecting the appropriate orientation ensures all data is visible and gives a polished look. Remind students to always preview before printing and to adjust scaling or margins as needed. For homework, ask them to prepare a one‑page report in a spreadsheet and set the correct orientation before printing.
