Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: role of multinational companies (MNCs): definition of MNC
Learning Objective/s:
  • Define a multinational company (MNC) and identify its key characteristics.
  • Explain the primary motivations for MNCs to operate abroad.
  • Analyse the positive and negative impacts of MNCs on host (developing) and home (developed) countries.
  • Evaluate policy measures that can maximise benefits and minimise drawbacks of MNC activity.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck summarising MNC definition and impacts
  • Handout with comparative table (home vs host)
  • Short video case study of an MNC
  • Sticky notes or index cards for group activity
  • Markers and flip chart
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “Which global brands do you see in your daily life?” Use responses to link students' existing knowledge of well‑known firms to the concept of multinational companies. Explain that today’s lesson will define MNCs, explore why they expand abroad, and outline the criteria for success.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – students list three brands they think are multinational; share answers.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – present definition, characteristics, and motivations using slides.
  3. Guided analysis (12’) – in pairs, examine the comparative table and identify benefits/drawbacks for host and home countries; teacher circulates with questioning.
  4. Case‑study video (8’) – watch a 3‑minute video of an MNC operating in a developing country, then discuss key impacts.
  5. Group activity (10’) – each group creates a simple diagram (on flip chart) showing flows of capital, technology, and labour between home and host; present to class.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – quick quiz (Kahoot or paper) with 3 questions on definition, motivations, and impacts.
  7. Summary recap (5’) – teacher highlights key points and links back to success criteria.
Conclusion:
Summarise how MNCs can drive development while also posing policy challenges, reinforcing the learning objectives. Ask students to write one question they still have on a sticky note as an exit ticket. For homework, assign a short research task: find a recent news article about an MNC’s activity in a developing country and note the reported benefits and concerns.
