Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 01/12/2025
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to format numerical values to display currency symbols
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose of currency formatting in spreadsheets and charts.
  • Apply spreadsheet tools to format numbers with the correct currency symbol, decimal places and negative‑value style.
  • Use the TEXT function to create currency‑formatted text strings for labels.
  • Construct a chart that correctly displays currency symbols on axes and data labels.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Computers with spreadsheet software (e.g., Excel, Google Sheets)
  • Sample spreadsheet file containing raw sales data
  • Worksheet handout with practice tasks
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed guide of common currency format codes
Introduction:

Show a short video clip of a news report where mis‑displayed monetary values cause confusion. Ask learners to recall how they have previously formatted numbers in spreadsheets. Explain that today they will master currency formatting and will be able to demonstrate the steps on a chart, meeting the IGCSE exam requirements.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Identify errors in a slide of unformatted monetary figures.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Demonstrate opening **Format Cells**, selecting the Currency category, choosing symbols, setting decimal places and negative‑value options.
  3. Guided practice (15') – Students format a provided data range and use the TEXT function to create currency‑formatted text for chart labels.
  4. Chart creation (10') – Learners build a bar chart from the formatted data and adjust axis/data‑label number formats.
  5. Check for understanding (5') – Quick quiz/exit ticket on the key steps and exam tips.
  6. Review & feedback (5') – Teacher highlights common mistakes and reinforces best practices.
Conclusion:

Summarise the four main actions: select cells, choose the correct currency symbol, set decimals/negative style, and ensure charts inherit the format. Students complete an exit ticket describing one step they found challenging. For homework, they will format a new set of international sales data and create a chart that displays the appropriate symbols.
