Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: Disease: types, causes, distribution, impacts
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main categories of diseases and their key characteristics.
  • Explain the biological, environmental, socio‑economic and behavioural causes of disease.
  • Analyse geographic patterns of major diseases using real‑world examples.
  • Evaluate the health, economic, social and environmental impacts of disease.
  • Propose strategies for disease surveillance and management in a geographic context.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • World map (digital or printed) showing disease hotspots
  • Printed handouts with the disease table
  • Markers and chart paper
  • Laptop with internet access for a short video
  • Worksheet for case‑study analysis
Introduction:

Begin with a quick “What disease comes to mind when you think of Africa, Asia or Europe?” to activate prior knowledge. Highlight that disease patterns are not random but shaped by geography. Explain that by the end of the lesson students will be able to identify disease types, explain why they occur in certain places, and suggest geographic‑based solutions.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Think‑pair‑share – list diseases they know and guess their locations.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Slide presentation on disease types and major causes.
  3. Mapping activity (15'): In groups, place disease cards on the world map and discuss influencing factors.
  4. Case‑study analysis (10'): Each group examines one disease from the table, identifying causes and impacts.
  5. Whole‑class discussion (10'): Compare findings, link impacts to climate change and policy.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Write one actionable strategy for managing a disease in a specific region.
Conclusion:

Recap the five disease categories, the key drivers of their geographic distribution, and the wide‑ranging impacts discussed. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign homework: research a recent emerging disease and prepare a one‑page summary of its causes, distribution and suggested management strategies.
