Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to place text and automated objects in headers and footers including file information, page numbering, total number of pages, date, time
Learning Objective/s:
  • Insert and format static text in document headers and footers.
  • Use Quick Parts to add automated fields such as file name, author, page number, total pages, date and time.
  • Apply “Different First Page” and “Different Odd & Even Pages” settings to customize layouts.
  • Produce a multi‑page document where all automated fields update correctly and verify them in Print Preview.
Materials Needed:
  • Computer with Microsoft Word (or equivalent word processor)
  • Projector and screen
  • Sample three‑page document file
  • Worksheet with field‑code reference sheet
  • Print‑preview handout
  • Internet access for video demo (optional)
Introduction:
Begin by asking students how they keep track of document details in reports they have created. Recall that they have already learned basic page layout and inserting text boxes. Explain that today they will learn to add dynamic information such as file name, page numbers and timestamps using header and footer tools. By the end of the lesson they will be able to produce a professional report that updates these details automatically.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students open a blank document and identify where a header/footer appears.
  2. Mini‑lecture & demo (10'): Teacher demonstrates Insert → Header/Footer, adds static text, and uses Quick Parts → Field to insert file name, author, date, and time.
  3. Guided practice (15'): Learners create a three‑page report, inserting a header with file name left and author right; a footer with “Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}” centred and the current date left.
  4. Differentiation (5'): Show “Different First Page” and “Different Odd & Even Pages”; students modify the first page header to be blank while keeping the footer.
  5. Check for understanding (5'): Quick quiz using self‑check questions and peer review of Print Preview.
  6. Consolidation (5'): Export the document as PDF and verify that all automated fields have updated correctly.
Conclusion:
Summarise that headers and footers provide a consistent framework for essential information and that automated fields keep that information current. For the exit ticket, ask each student to write one field code they used and its purpose. Assign homework to create a one‑page letterhead employing different odd/even page settings and submit the PDF in the next class.
